Cultural industries: Blog task

1) cultural industries means the creation , production and distribution of products of a cultural or artistic nature.

2)Hesmondhalgh identifies that the societies in which the cultural industries are highly profitable tend to be societies that support the conditions where large companies, and their political allies, make money. He also identifies texts that challenge different ideologies and capitalism or inequalities of gender stereotypes.

3)media products offer different ideologies that challenge capitalism and ideologies because  the cultural industry needs to constantly compete with each other to secure its audience members as the companies themselves need to fill in audience desires.

4) Hesmondhalgh identifies numerous problems with cultural industries such as risky business as it may be difficult for companies to earn profit if they are independent or individual and another problem is high production costs and low production costs means that big hits in music are extremely profitable and this makes costs vary.

5)The reason why so many companies are a risky business for the companies involved is because the cultural industry is reliant on other cultural industry companies to make audiences aware of their product and they can achieve high level of profit but this is risky due to the fact that it may difficult to achieve high level of profit for individual and independent companies.

6)In my opinion the media is mainly all about profit as when these products are promoted they are done for a reason there is communication through different companies and this is done to make audiences more intrigued to whatever they are promoting. Furthermore the fact that films are being made in other ways like 3D and in imax cinemas it is too promote them in different ways to make more profit.

7) Cultural industries maximise their profit and minimise their risk by diversification as the companies branch out to different companies in order to survive and this helps them to earn more money because they become more well known in the media.

8) I agree to some extent that the way cultural industries operate reflect the inequalities and injustices because there is massive difference of how different societies have access to the media and this is in terms of wealth, gender and ethnicity. Furthermore they face other challenges like growing influence and opening up in the media into Hollywood as it is much harder.

9) Visual effects industry has suffered due to the industry being crushed by economic crisis and they became bank Rupt and they were suffering financial problems and the fact that they were struggling so their budget was low and the production movies had got more money but visual effects were still paid low and the industry was going through problems.

10) Commodification is transforming objects in commodities which involves producing things for the change and this changes social significance of cultural industries.

11) I agree to some extent that  when media texts are created they fail to reflect the diversity of people in wider society due to the fact that as mosco argues that the media texts that are made available all promote the same thing and just have different voices. There is a difference between multiplicity – a large number of voices – and diversity – whether or not these voices are actually offering different things from each other.

12)Hesmondhalgh argues that industries have changed because of digitisation as now audiences can access the media through a variety of things not just one thing which means industries have become more broad, Also a significant development is  Cultural products can now be shared across national borders. This increased the adaptation, reinvention and hybridity of genres and products. It also enables cultures to reaffirm their values, reducing the cultural influence of the USA.

ownership and control blog task

1)media conglomerate:
21st century fox

conglomerate ownership:
The Brands and companies and media products that the 21st century fox are best known for are the fox entertainment group the national geographic channel, fox news channel, sky and blue sky studios.

Vertical and horizontal integration:
21st century fox, fox entertainment group, 20th century fox

horizontal integration:
studios in Bollywood, cinemas, TV channels, DVD Rental shops.

Synergy:
Fox news  examples in the Simpsons as they promote same ideologies.

2) I believe that the government could prevent media conglomerates from being dominate but this would create advantages as the conglomerates show that in society we do not want to cheaply made films. We become impressed  with new technology and creations with producers and actors: to sum it up we want good quality films that we will remember. This would make it good for it becoming dominant however if they do become very dominate it would take away audiences preferences and this would create more hassle for the audience and how they view the conglomerates

3)The process of production, promotion and distribution is that this process provides audiences with the media products they want it needs to consider the audience's desires and should provide the gratifications the audience expects. The promotion process researchers and identifies the target audience for the product, and uses advertising and marketing strategies to inform and persuade them of the value of the media product. The Distribution process uses the most appropriate methods for getting the product to the audiences and making it as easy as possible for them to access it.

4) The different funding models for the different institutions are business media that are the organisations which underpin control and own TV programming , film and music

5)One example is marvel and the writer is saying that it is different from reality and go with audiences expectations of marvel which makes their company very successful and another example is Disney which is for children's entertainment and the writer believes that it creates familiar and reassuring expectations for the audience. Also Spotify was a music app that allowed everyone to listen to music whenever and where ever  and this enabled modern audiences to communicate with instituions.

6) The new business models media companies have to adopt due to the changes in technology and distribution is that they have to reconsider their business model which mean that music companies do not make profit through music itself but the merchandising the sponsorship and the extra things makes these companies earn more money and the cinemas have invested in 3D just to engage with the audience.

7) Technologies becoming major institutions as they are having to adapt to survive and the changes that are increasing are things like , Amazon, Facebook, Google and yahoo have become media institutions. As google and you tube have changed the way we have access to music and moving entertainment as it has become more revolutionised.

8)In my opinion Traditional media companies are struggling to survive as they are having to adapt to the new ways the things are bought to the audience as audiences tend to reject traditional tv programmes and newspapers and cinema exhibition as the media is constantly coming up with new ways to attract certain audiences.

9)Diversification may help companies to survive and thrive in a rapidly changing media company due to media companies branching out into different area of the industry which helps them to earn more money as they become more well known in the media.

10)In my opinion the relationship between audiences and institutions is that they are both can interrelate with each other as audiences are increasingly using certain things and these things are set for them and the media institutions recognise these things as more apps recognise your preferences in the news on your phone and things on you tube which suggest what you may like to watch and i believe that the media conglomerates will maintain control as what is viewed and what is not which will increase as the media is becoming more and more sophisticated.

media regulation: blog task

1) Regulation is what needs to be monitored in the media and media industries need to be regulated due to prevent young people and more vulnerable people accessing the media that isn't suited for them.

2) OFCOM is responsible for granting licences to TV and Radio stations and it is illegal to broadcast TV or Radio signals without a licence from OFCOM. Before the development of digital broadcasting technologies,it was only possible to have 4 or 5 TV stations broadcasting at the
same time before the signals would begin to interfere with each other.

3)The three most important sections of the broadcasting code are section 2 harm and offence, section 8 privacy and section 1 protection of under 18's. This is because for these three areas to be regulated and checked and the internet to be used in this way causes the internet to be more useful as if the things shown to under 18's it would be more civilised and less harm and offence caused and less crime but if these sections are not taken into consideration then this will have impact on the younger people and the vulnerable as well.

4) I do not agree with OFCOM that it was wrong to show wolverine on a Sunday evening at 6:55pm as this could be interpreted in many different ways as not everyone becomes violent after seeing violence or abuse it depends on the individual and how much control they have. Therefore this film is watched with a family it could be regulated by them in this instance and depends how the reaction is as a whole.

5)The 5 sections of the press complaints in the commissions code of practise privacy , harassment, Discrimination, children in sex cases and reporting of crime.

6) The press complaints commission was criticised due to the fact that its critics claim that the lack of statuary powers means that when a newspaper has been found breaking the rules, the best victim can hope for its apology and this is not often doesn't get sufficient prominence in the paper.

7) The Leveson enquiry was “culture, practice and ethics of the press” was held, mainly as a result of the so-called phone hacking scandal. This was set up due to the fact that Clive Goodman (the royal reporter of the News of the World newspaper) and Glenn Mulcaire (a private investigator, employed by Goodman) were imprisoned for illegally intercepting phone calls connected to the royal family.

8) In 2014 the PCC was replaced by the Independent Press Standards Organisation. This new body  has been set up by the newspaper industry itself and it’s code of practice

is essentially the same as the code administered by the PCC.

9) I Believe that press regulation is important in society as it helps the most vulnerable from consuming the data that is inappropriate towards them. However newspapers should also be regulated as the stories put in them could be anything and cause hassle amongst the audiences consuming the media it self.

10) Internet regulation  is basically restricting or controlling access to certain aspects or information. Internet regulation consists of: Censorship of data, and controlling aspects of the Internet such as domain registration, IP address control and more.  This is difficult to control due the fact that its used all over the world not just in one country like newspapers and TV which means it is more difficult as it would be more money consuming for the companies themselves and they would have to employ more people to actually regulate the internet all over the country which wouldn't be as idealistic.

The effects debate blog task

1)  No i do not play violent video games or watch violent movies and i am not violent in real life.

2) Whenever i see a product being advertised on TV i sometimes have a look if i want to buy it if it looks good or if its a valuable product.

3) I haven't really seen a documentary that has drawn my attention to a certain topic.

2) The four categories of different effects theories:

  • Direct effect theories
  • Diffusion Theories
  • Indirect effect theories
  • The pluralist approach
3)The examples provided for the hypodermic needle theory are child's play the murder of Jamie Bulgar, Marilyn Manson The columbine high school shootings, Natural Born killers as a number of murders took place within couples and director was sued for inciting violence.

4) The 1999 columbine massacre happened on the 20th of April 1999, two teens went on a shooting spree at columbine High School in littleton, Colorado, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide. In the aftermath of the shootings, many schools across america  enacted zero tolerance rules regarding disruptive  behaviour and threats of violence from students. This school re opened later in the year 1999 but still left a huge impact within the community.

5) The reason why this massacre could have took place would have been due to the teenagers were not seeing themselves as fitting in with their peers and the school and could have been a result of the internet and violent movies and games and along with how easily they got access to weapons.

6) Gerbner's cultivation theory suggests that the media has a impact on a individuals attitude rather behaviour and conveys the idea that as one one format of media doesn't have too much effect but repeated exposure does as the audience doesn't pay that much attention to them as they appear normal to the audience as they becomes desensitised to it.

7)The front page of the daily mail links to the cultivation theory as it says that children are glued to technology for four hours a day which suggests that even though this harmful towards a child's health it has become normalised as that is what all children are doing they spend their time on the internet more than they do outside.

8) The fact sheet suggests that as violence is films is becoming more and the audience is being shown it more it is causing the audience to become desensitised towards it and the audience realise why its being used in certain narratives because they are able to socialise with these specific characters.

9) The criticisms of the direct effects theory is that critics see both these direct theories
a judgement is being made about the mass audience as they are assumed to be easily led and
not perceptive or self-aware.  Also this theory identifies the media as being a negative influence but doesn't consider forms of 'high art' in the same way.

10)The 1970's sitcom love thy neighbour may be controversial in today's society due to audience interpreting many things in different ways as it is polysemic and not everyone would agree with this view. The reception theory suggests that the audience create meanings in different ways as there is a dominant preferred meaning, a oppositional reading and negotiated  reading as audience only accepts part of the producers views.

11) The examples provided for Stuart hall's reception theory is the Sun newspaper and this suggests that values are bypassed every time an audience member ignores the reporting and opinion to read the TV guide and sports pages.

12)The Audience theory that I believe is most convincing is the uses and Gratifications theory as it is an approach to understanding why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy specific needs. I think this theory outlines the way audiences interpret meaning and definition for the media really well and it is important to develop critical antonmy because audiences will be able to develop understanding of different media and able to identify fake news. The hypodermic needle suggests that everything is injected to the audience and they perceive it without thinking this may only be true to some extent as people are now more media literate.

Audience theory 2

1) The social learning theory doesn't necessarily simplify the cause of violence in society as it depends what the audience interpretations are about the violence being portrayed and how it is consumed by them therefore the anti social behaviour could be due to how the audiences are interpreting the behaviour and how they overcome this as different people will have different notions of this as a whole.

2)The new generation may be learning behaviours from the media especially now days because of how the media is presenting people and this results in people changing their own behaviour for example celebrities being conveyed with different styles and language which may be copied due to the status they gain and this may help someone else also gain the same status. Also the adverts use celebrities to portray different brands resulting in that brand being bought more due to the perspectives that audiences hold about the advert itself.

3)examples of moral panic from last fifty years:
1) The examples of moral panics are things like human abuse and attacks that happen around the area and this heightens emotions for the people that live there because of the events that take place and also the fact that now there is increase in. For example any illnesses that also come out like Ebola and bird flew these effect people's lives and create moral panic in people's minds. Also the violence in video games and how this is effecting the youth now can also create moral panic due to the fact that how they are acting after playing these games.

4) The techno panics examples that are given which are a result in fear to increase is the internet and increase of technology because these factors made the audience take the new generation into consideration as many assumed they would not go out and meet people but instead just make them stay indoors glued to the internet which means they would become more introverted as a result and many people would fear this due to the activities that take over certain individuals.

5) Techno panics should be addressed via societal learning, experimentation, resiliency, and coping strategies rather than regulation. this is because if it doesn't happen this way it will limit the use of the internet and make it less beneficial for everyone else.

6) The internet could be controlled but if this was the case it would create more people wanting to see different things on the internet which would result in hacks and this would be all over the news most of the time and especially now the media would tremendously exaggerate. Furthermore now people can control what is shown on the internet to their kids and the younger children because companies allow on what they can access which make it easier for them. Therefore I don't think the government needs to deal with the control over the internet.

7) Gerber's cultivation theory states that high frequency viewers of television are more susceptible to media messages and the belief that they are real and valid. I believe that the now everyone is more media literate and understand differences between difference types of news that the media give out. furthermore the fact that there are more abusers and cyber bullying there are many ways of tackling this now so audiences are less likely to be shocked and are therefore more desensitised.

8) Heavy internet use is not something we necessarily need to be afraid of because now everyone uses it much more and this is mostly for socialising or domestic purposes. The fact that the younger generation use the internet more and rely on it this may be worrying as this makes them want to go out less so this may be a factor that makes the use of heavy internet much more worrying.

Audience theory 1:

Hypodermic needle model:

1)This Article links to the hypodermic needle model because this game that was being played was increasing the aggressive behaviour amongst young adults because of what they were seeing and as a result it was having a long term affect via what was being shown through this game as the violence increased aggression and this links with the hypodermic needle model as it injects the information gradually to have a long term effect.  Furthermore there was results showing that those who played the violent games had an increase in their hostile expectations-meaning there were more likely to think the characters would react with aggression or violence.

2)This Article front page link to the hypodermic needle model because the cover line mentions the boy being addicted to video games who never got out of his room and this conveys the fact that the by was playing such games that made him to do this and enabled him from going out and this may influence the audience to judge his character. As there  are no other particular reasons why this boy may have committed this crime it may be criticised because of this.

Two Step Flow Model:

1)The two step model suggest that the media is led by opinion leaders and that  the hypodermic needle model is too simplistic and i think that this may be true to some extent as the media does try to make people believe in types of news that may not completely be true but exaggerated and the two step model may suggest that not all media factors are important which means that audience has become more media literate suggesting change has taken place despite some news being over emphasised in the media as all audiences interpret these in ways as media is seen to be polysemic.

2)This YouTube blogger fits in with the two step model because he has many subscribers suggesting that his views are taken into account and make value his opinion. Furthermore  there is a huge influence towards the audience because of his videos.

3)This article from the telegraph shows how this can be linked with the two step model as it does show how easily audiences can be easily influenced through the media and the social media can have huge impact through the audience.

4) Jamal Edwards links to the two step model because of the way he reached success so quickly shows his position is the media is much higher and he is being used in the media to influence other teens and convey his position within the media. Therefore it shows how the two step model says that the media mediates from the opinion leaders and this is a main example that is following this model.

MIGRAIN october assessment learner response

1) WWW:  Solid Grasp and application of theory
EBI: you need to be more detailed in your interpretation of the meaning of texts, especially Q4

Points missed out in each question:

1) Propp's character types

2)Add more detailed differences about both adverts.

3)For this question i missed out Genre Theorists

4) I Needed to add more types of counter hegemonic readings.

3) Exemplar response points comparison:

1) For the first question i missed out the types of enigma and action codes within this advert.

2)Talk about various audience viewpoints

3)Break up my points in different paragraphs and include better interpretation

4)Add in interpretation and add in different types of hegemonic readings

4) I didn't get any media terminology wrong but I did miss out some key theorists like Ambercrombie and Levi Strauss and Propp.

5) My strongest question was question one because I revised narrative theory very well and knew both theorists.

6) My weakest question was Question 4 as i lost a lot of marks because my interpretation wasn't clear enough and i didn't add enough detail about each of the readings.

7) Question 4 Re written:

In my opinion Figure 3 illustrates a variety of readings as different audiences can interpret this in different ways.

The central image of this magazine which is shown is Miguel who is an R&B star and very popular and recognised amongst different nations. Hall's reception theory can be applied to this poster because adverts are seen to be polysemic. The preferred reading is what the producer wants the audience to think so from this poster the producer want to reveal the success story of this particular star because certain typographies  convey this as there is lots of informal language that is used within this to portray his life changing experience through this challenging nature of the poster.
This may also be depicting the different stereotypes that have been used for example, 'sex drugs and R&B' could be stating the fact that this star Miguel has got his success through many different aspects of bad culture reinforcing to the audience that he has challenged authority.

Furthermore, the use of the jewellery is very reflective within this poster as it creates a 'bling' look for this star this may be stereotyping the urban culture of music because it is reinforcing his fame and success but also convey the lack of education through this look. Also the fact that the poster refers to "Who is The music's number one genius?" could be highlighting the fact that some audiences may not agree that Miguel is the number one music star so this may contribute to the oppostional readings. This certain look may be used to intrigue  teens especially because of his body language and the dress up look used. This may also put the audience against this poster as they might view this urban music street culture as something that is receptive towards the audience.

In addition to this, Hall's reception theory states the fact that there can also be negotiated reading that can be made which is that audiences may adopt somewhere between the two extremes of this particular poster, as it could be purposefully centralising this image of Miguel R&B star to overcome other music stars but the audience may disagree with as there open interpretations that could be made against the question, "Who is the musics number one genius?" this could lead the audiences towards different connotations of this music poster as it may engage with different audiences accordingly as the informal language and politics that is used to describe it can be negotiated depending different audiences.

In conclusion Stuart Hall's reception theory does arrange over the interpretations that could be made of this poster as it can be viewed accordingly based on different audiences perspectives.

Narrative blog task

1) The film that follows Torodov's  structure is that titanic as it starts with the state of harmony as everyone is boarding the ship and this sets the seen which allows the audience to feel relaxed and sense of pleasure this is known as the equilibrium as this shows balanced normality of the world of the story. Furthermore there is a disequilibrium within this movie as the ship hits the ice burg and it crashes the ship making it sink and the complications arise as there isn't enough life boats on the ship and some people do get saved and some don't and the climax was that it does get solved as the women does get saved but the rest die so there is some sort of a pleasurable ending for the audience as it ends with peace and the disequilibrium is restored as it caused the world of text to change and it ends with normality creating a new Equilibrium.

2) This episode is from the vampire diaries and its the geographical markers establishes the setting through showing two people in a car driving and the atmosphere seems dark and eerie which lets the audience know that its dark and it seems to be in a town in America. Furthermore the fact that we are introduced with two mysterious deaths makes the audience want to carry on watching this is the temporal marker as we know about the genre which is horror and thriller as the scene gives this away. In addition to this the historical marker seems modernised as we are introduced to a young teen who has lost her parents and assume that the deaths that happened were the girls parents. This is the character marker and as the season commences you get to know more information about the girl and family through other marker. There are other factors that lets us know the genre of this TV series as every time the male character sees blood he begins to turn into a vampire which lets the audience know the generic marker which is science fiction and horror and drama.

3)The first example that i believe fits with props theory is Harry Potter as the villan would be voldemort, The dispatcher and donor is Dumbledore, The Helper's are Ron and Hermoine. The Princess if Ginny, The false hero would be Draco Malfoy and the Hero is Harry himself .One of the most popular movie franchises of all time, Harry Potter is built around these character codes.
Another example would be cry wolf and star wars.

4) An example of binary opposition is in Harry potter as harry is constantly seen as the good guy n films and has always been a target for Voldermort who is seen as the evil guy throughout the film as these opposites are constantly exaggerated throughout the films.

5)The examples provided from the fact sheet is Lord of the rings which emphasise the  fact that the winner often represents the dominant ideas and values of our culture. When the policeman captures the criminal in a crime drama– the ideology of the value of law and order is emphasised.

6) Enigma and action codes provide gratification for the audience because problems are and creates tension for the audience and the viewers are curious to what action will be taking place and as there are different narratives for each movie there is different genre and audiences can feel a great range of emotions.

7)Episodic narrative: A type of series that can be watched regardless which part and ends with a resolution in each episode.

Overarching narrative: This is the kind of serial which doesn't have a resolution at the end of each episode but resolves when the the serial finishes.

Mixed narrative: When the TV episode or serial uses an overarching narrative which over complicates the situation so that tension can build up for a number of days in a number of episodes.

Multi Strand overlapping narrative: This is an open narrative which sometimes has resolutions and sometimes doesn't and tells different stories at the same time.

8) The fact sheet suggests that the adverts use narrative because these elements of narrative are included within it as audiences understand the way this structure works and are able to interpret the stories through their logical sequencing. Narrative is a structure which helps us make sense of events and occurrences in the real world and so is an important aspect of the production of media texts to allow audiences to make sense of the events and occurrences they are presented with.

Genre Blog Task

Fact sheet 3:

1) The example that s provided for why visual iconographies are important are star trek and star wars which is related to science fiction.

2)The example provided for importance of narrative in identifying genre are Independence Day, Deep Impact and The day after tomorrow and the heroes are represented in codes and conventions of the genre to help identify it.

3)The difference between between character representation is action movies and disaster movies is that the characters within the action movies convey individual strength and power where as in disaster movies they portray team work and collaboration between the characters.

4) According to Bordwell films can be categorised via period or country, Director or star , technical process, style , series and audience which all contribute to the codes and conventions within the film.

5)  Audiences use Genre  in a number of ways for example through 1)selecting what is best for them and this enables them to choose and whilst comparing different TV shows people normally describe the genre. 2)own knowledge because they will know what genre they like or dislike 3)The fact that the genre of the film prepares its audience as they will know what to expect from the film.

6)The three ways genre is used by institutions and producers is through production which means to look at successful examples of genre and replicate them within their film or TV series. 2) Attracting an audience which means making audiences try new sit coms and help the media become more successful.3)Marketing text through trailers and posters which helps the film become more successful.

7)The Film Genre which has helped genre to evolve is science fiction and horror and over time iconographies have changed but genre become stale and uninteresting.

Fact sheet 126:

1)five films with superhero Genre:

  • scott pilgrim vs the world
  • spiderman
  • guardians of the galaxy
  • iron man
  • Hulk
2)The superhero genre has allowed audiences to engage with the films more and feel more empathy for the characters within these films which help them underpin the ideologies relating to other texts and change their perspectives based on this.

3)Schatz theory can be applied to superhero genre as it states that the codes and conventions give a hint to the audience what the genre might be this is through innovation and the fact that it was being replicated through different movies engaged with the audience more. This created parodies of these films so that audiences don't take them too seriously. This theory stated that audiences look at the genre more than the story being told and sometimes this can also have a negative effect as the genre may disappear like in horror movies and disengage from the audience.

General:
1) The film that i will be talking about will be Forest Gump because i think this film is very interesting the way it is set out as it communicates to the audience really well through the protagonist of this film.
2) This film was a modern fiction which is war related but made very distinctively as the protagonist speaks thought the majority of the film and i watched it during history as it was related to the thing i was studying.
3)The that i thought it was more of violence and a normal story to it but this was very different as the film mainly focused on how this solider got through the war and this movie mainly layered different perspectives on top of Forrest's .As the audience, we get his perspective on events,  but we also can use our superior smarts to figure out what is really going on in situations that go straight over sweet, dumb Forrest's head. This is narrative irony which is when the audience knows something the character doesn't.
4)I thought this film was a romantic comedy.
5)I thought this genre fit in well with the film as these elements go with the protagonist's personality and the story of the film.
6)The basic themes of this film are used specifically to portray the values and ideologies of the film as there is classical irony which creates a specific atmosphere  for the audience as the character doesn't know something that we do which links in with drama and romance of this film.
7)This genre is very typical in terms of context as the visual iconographies that are used within this film vary to a large extent as it mediates within this movie and generates a certain atmosphere for the audience.
8)The expectations i would have from this film is that i would expect there to be a happy ending but the ending wasn't which made this film very different in terms of other films and makes it stand out which shows the audience the deconstruction of the genre and how they are used to establish different aspects within movies.
9)I haven't found any generic labels for this media text.
10) The generic labels vary considerably as the film s named Forrest Gump which link in with his emotions.
11) The conventions i found within this film were closely linked with genres of integration as the main themes comedies romance and internal conflict is all focused on by Forrest giving this film a varied set of ideologies and making it classical.
12)The film does stretch the conventions to a minimum extent but keeps it well established by making it less of a parody and more of a deconstructed film establishing new ideas and emotions through the protagonist making the audience feel empathy for him.
13)The text departs when he starts talking about his love life which  wouldn't have expected him doing within this film as i thought he would be more physically damaged by the war but he was also emotionally damaged as well.
14)The conventions of this movie are closely linked as they are drama comedy and romance which make this movie a very good deconstruction and not a parody.
15)The familiar motifs are used when Foresst is telling his story which could be pasted from a biography film making it have some elements of cliche but not too much making it seem more innovated by establishes these varied Genres within this film.

Symbol:
The women within this advert could be seen as the symbol within this advert because she isn't really resembling anything maybe because women are more associated with colour pink the producer may have chosen to put it there but this makes it seem very stereotypical.

Related image

This is one advert which could be interpreted in various ways in my belief this advert isn't very good at advertising the need of quitting to smoke because it doesn't show this clearly. For example the picture of the child smoking is very controversial no one would really make their child smoke and even if they do they wouldn't do it when there child is around furthermore the audience aren't really sure what the advert is saying to its audience whether you should quit smoking or whether you become a vegan even though, there are symbols portraying this like in the bottom right hand corner of the advert it is literally saying to go vegan. The index within this advert which is represented is the smoke which could be resembling the suffocation and the harmfulness that smoking can create. However this advert is not literal and not direct to the audience so this advert could be seen as confusing and men nothing to some people. For example we could say that the producer has used the baby in this scenario but it isn't very interesting for the audience has it has portrayed a very controversial image of this child.

Image result for successful adverts makeup

I think that this advert is a very successful one as it has represented and portrayed this mascara in a very creative way the fact that the icons, symbols and index are used in a very smart way. For example the flower is the symbol in this advert in particular as it isn't representing anything but it makes sure it adds to the beauty of this advert it makes it more filled with passion and seductiveness for the audience as the colours are vibrant and bright adding to the semiotics of this advert. All adverts are seen has polysemic which makes them harder for everyone to interpret in the same as way as some people's interpretations are different. As this advert also conveys beauty through the women's face this could be the index as it acts as a signifier towards the audience. Furthermore the symbol could be the quote and the sayings within this advert as they portray the icons through a positive light and intrigue the audience about this product being used which means it is a could signifier towards this product.

Reception Theory

Dominant Preferred and hegemonic reading:

From this advert i can that this is a Reebok advert that is mainly trying to inspire its audience and and 50 cent is acting as a role model to other people in reference to the quote ''i am what i am'' this motivates people as it is in a Gothic font which could mean that life is timeless. This is all promoted with the use of the brand through identity and liberty.

Negotiated reading :

The main point about this advert is that the media reinforces this particular black ethnicity to be more related to crime which is stereotypical in society because of the connotations different people interpret from it and this creates the myth and makes the adverts and all sorts of media polysemic
which contributes to the different opinions of how everyone views this certain image. Alternatively this advert could also be seem as more positively than in a negative way as it could be countering the hegemonic reading and celebrating criminal-ism. This advert could be be more right wing as their could be beliefs could be about economic freedom and how businesses should not be regulated and freedom and success over equality because this advert has used direct mode of address indirectly directing it to the audience by using both quotes in very different fonts and telling h audience to be more determined and this myth that has been created around this advert could be built up as it all becomes natural to society and potentially even make an impact in people's lives. These elements all depend on how the individual view this advert as they are polysemic and not everyone has the same interpretations of these adverts which could create a gap between the directors intentions of this advert and the audiences interpretation.

counter hegemonic reading:

This advert could be promoting criminal-ism but the individual perspectives could be different as the producer may intend to make this advert to promote inspiration and identity but others may not view it this way as they may see it negatively because they may think this is stereotypical as a certain type of ethnicity has been used (Black) rather than any other racial group so they may think its is directing only towards them and this could be a signifier within this advert as it is doing the communication and promoting this idea and may not passively get accepted in society.

Image result for adverts to analyse

Dominant Preferred and hegemonic reading:

The producer has created this advert to promote these pop chips as being healthy and nutritious for yourself and not too fattening as Katy Perry is portrays holding two bags and this bring out the idea that these pop-chips can be eaten as much as you want to eat them so this could be the key intention of the producer could be to advertise this.

Negotiated reading :

As this advert portrays the pop chips the headline give us much more to think about as it mentions the ''love with the handles''. which makes the audience interested and read the name of the object being promoted because they would think that it is fat free and because there is reliance on Katy Perry which the producer would have purposely done to make it seem more realistic and promote these chips as a healthier option to normal chips and the fact that it indirectly talks about the fat on the body and keeps referring to no fat on the body as it mentions underneath '' good thing they don't go straight to my hips'' which gives us a idea that these pop-chips must be less fattening for everyone which is what is the good thing about this product and why it is being promoted. However adverts are seen to be polysemic because not everyone will have the same interpretations as some people may believe it is centralised to mainly women as they are thought to be fit and maintain  their body weight and some women may argue against this matter and why there is no man present within this advert as it could be directly centralising women.

counter hegemonic reading:

The idea that this advert is going against women's size and body weight could be objectifying them and could bring out the fact that instead of promoting this product in a respectful manner it could be going against women. This makes it seem to overcome the temptation of always staying healthy but everyone may not see it like that as people may have different interpretations of this advert.

Do these adverts provide evidence for the idea that audiences are free to interpret messages in a variety of ways - including rejecting them?

I believe that both adverts convey the message that is trying to be said to the audience in a rational way however some people may interpret these in very different ways as the adverts are seen to be polysemic which shows the different aspects of these adverts. Both adverts provide evidence for the audience feeling free to interpret their message as there is no direct mode of address directly saying anything which conveys the idea that they are less controversial then they appear to be. For the first advert i believe that there is a idea to portray the advert in a way to make the younger generation more motivated and determined within themselves independently but this may also bring out the fact that the media could be reinforcing the idea about one ethnicity being involved in all these criminal activities and this may offend some people and bring out more of a negative response from the different audiences. In addition to this the second advert also portrays difference elements of these negotiations as you can interpret in different ways the advert does allow you to do that as it. As this advert refers to size and weight of women particularly linked to the junk food  and making these pop-chips seem healthier and show them in that way makes the audience want to buy these pop-chips as they feel like it would be a better option is resisting the temptation of other junk food. These aspects of portraying the pop chips like this make the audience interested as Katy Perry is holding it making it more centralised and seem like a amazing product. This advert may be interpreted as a positive one or a negative one in the sense that it could just be literally saying that these pop chips are very healthy and they are less fattening or it could be objectifying women and centralising this particular advert to them directly and argue why there is no man present so it could be a stereotypical advert that has been portrayed in the media. This is what may get some people to go against this as just like the first one only one ethnicity has been shown it may be that the producer is showing it in a positive way to make black people seem more inspiring or in a negative way to make their ethnicity seem more criminalising which may offend some people and argue against this particular advert as it seems more stereotypical. Therefore both these adverts show the negotiations and counter hegemonic reading in both these adverts.

Advert analysis homework

Related imageThis Magazine is mostly considered as one that promotes fashion and from this we can see a picture of a blonde haired women that looks glamorous and alluring to the audience from this i can connote that it is emphasising femininity as she is also wearing a blue dress and has a big smile on her face promoting beauty to its audience. As we know that this magazine is best known worldwide and has beauty trends from all over the world it is very well known so it is important to point out that Vogue magazine is international, so it presents fashion news from all different countries and the informative articles on beauty trends all over the world. The purpose of this magazine is to create a world of beauty and fashion with its own rules and style of life Vogue magazine presents a kind of religion that is aimed to form a society with certain tastes view points on beauty and fashion to influence women's lives. I think that this has been achieved as nowadays most women all over the world read vogue magazine and also follows its religion so that it proves the claim of glamour and fashion. So from this we know the target audience are women for this type of magazine as the title is a orthodox ''Great American Women'' implying the power and authority women promote through this magazine.

The colours used within this magazine are also like pink for the typography emphasising on the femininity again and it is also big and bold and is a sanserif font so it  can appear as being more sophisticated as the colours would intrigue the audience and the colours are used in various high end fashion magazines. As this magazine is mainly promoting fashion the way that these pictures are framed and positioned is in a certain way to make us have a different aspect of fashion for example the women standing with hard lighting hitting her and making her look as if she has  confidence, womanhood, and the qualities that every women desires so this women promoting that makes the magazine look more desiring. These are the Mise en scene aspects of this magazine cover and in addition to this the composition of the women is close up and it is not a long shot as it portrays her looks and appearance more closely so that women can get genera idea of these womanly looks and the women's picture is also he biggest from all the other texts on that magazine suggesting it is classy and from high end in fashion as there is no slang used in this cover of the magazine which makes it seem more upmarket and fashionable towards the audience.

This type of magazine would be bought by people who seem to be wanting to fulfil their needs and as this magazine has great sophistication in promoting the fashion and trends worldwide and it is a international magazine it imposes this idea more easily.  For example the idea that the women is standing makes her more appealing and the pose and structure her looking contented makes the audience more interested.

Analysis on RBK 50 cent Advert

This advert is more of a inspiring one which could be for the young generation and give some sort of inspiration to them, as from the advert we can read the quote that could be giving a desire to achieve something and in order to achieve it you shouldn't wait for your goals to come to you and it could mean that you should work harder and put your best in everyday to reach those expectations and values. The connotations of this advert could relating to mise en scene as the person in this image is serious is a signified within this advert and portrayed in a momentous way to give the audience a more dominant feeling. There also could be juxtaposition between the two backgrounds of the advert as there is fingerprints which could mean its also crime related and behind him its all black and the advert is completely monochrome there is no touch of colour which could suggest there is elements of power, authority and strength. The typography could also suggest that this is more historical as the font is Sarif giving it a traditional touch and once again linking to the dominance and power related themes and also by giving this desaturated element it intrigues the audience even more especially the younger generation as we can identify that this could be promoting the brand and by making it look more characterised by the inspirational  quotes which gives the audience more interest to look at this advert. The composition of this advert is arranged systematically as the male in this advert has been centralised giving it more dominance within this advert.

Furthermore as this advert is monochrome it can get consumers o focus into the advert more as these colours could relate to professionalism and power and authority. This advert has photos of a man who's image has been centralised and the fingerprints given at the back of the quote and could mean its promoting the brand but focusing on  more of a black ethnic minority as they are seen as more cool in society and this gives a more deeper thought of the dominance that is signified within this advert and the central image which has helped the audience to identify this power related theme within this advert. The mages within this advert are quite big compared to the text to give it a main focal point for the advert itself.  However the quote on this advert is much more smaller compared to the catch phrase ' I am what i am' which is more bold and historical and relates to more of a traditional font rather than modern which could signify potential and the fact that the picture within this advert is close up makes it even  more focused and intrigues the audience as a whole as the person is shown in a stern and serious light and it also at a side angle which shows more light into the eyes and upper part of the face which could connote capacity and ability and mise en scene is use d here very well as the lighting is only on his face which brings the attention on him and makes him stand out. In addition to this as the background is plain it could also mean there is even more focus on him as the background is not too flashy or distracting it is just plain making him the central image of this advert but the setting is not seen here which could means they had other priorities that helped them sell their product. The fact that this photo is taken and is shown in this advert could be because it works well as 50 cent is a very well known person so they have decided to focus on him persuading the audience to buy Reebok products.

Textual Analysis

Related imageThis is a poster advertising a certain type of lip Balm from Maybelline from this poster we can see certain colours and aspects have been used to portray the Lip Balm in a special way, from advert poster we see the conventions which are the Bright and Dull colours used which bring out the colour of the Lip Balm which is Bright yellow which is the pack shot of this advert as the audience (Women) would see the image of the object last which means that this is the central image of this advert to present it in a certain way. Furthermore the headline which is used, ''no more basic lip balm'' which suggest to us this pun is used advertising its uses to engage the audience. Also this commercial is particularly aimed at women which means it would intrigue women more and make them want to buy this product. In addition to this  the fact that the women's picture is grayscale and the lips are signified in a particular shade which makes it look more captivating to fascinate the audience. This type of advert could be seen in magazines, bus stops or in front of a cosmetics store as they want the product to be sold as much as possible.

The values and beliefs that challenge this media is how society actually portrays women as we can see from this advert the women appears in a monochrome shade and the lips are not desaturated showing the centralising bit of the image which would appeal to the audience and this would really get them to focus on that. Furthermore as this this poster could be more aimed at women than men it could reinforce the idea that women are seen too have attractive features and their appearances matter  than men. The key conventions that let me identify the text was the way the women's picture was centralised and how the image of the lip balm was also portrayed as a pack shot image which shows the actual object that is trying to be sold and promoted through this advert. This makes the audience interested more because they know what is being promoted and by seeing the object itself it makes it more easily sold and promoted.

My media consumption

My Media Consumption:

Newspapers:

Online:
I access the internet quite often from my phone which is my primary device for accessing it and mostly go on sites to watch movies or help me with school work i also like reading books online on
Kindle as i find it much easier. The internet also helps me to keep in touch with others like friends and family which is also a main reason for using it.  The social networks i use are only snapchat and whatsapp to communicate with others  i have these because they help me keep in contact with friends and family.

Reflection:
To develop the amount of media i consume i think i should interact more with the news not just online but also newspapers and listen to the radio more to give me a stronger understanding of the media and also by doing these things this will help me at A level to perform better. The three things that i will begin to look at are newspapers, books and different websites like the daily mail or the guardian.
