magazine practical task planning:

1) My main image for my magazine is going to be to do with fashion a children's magazine or teen which i may also consider to do. I may use a picture of a teenage girl or a younger girl in the front image of my magazine. I am going to make the lighting very high on my magazine to give it a glamorous look.

2)The things i need:

  • model
  • nice costume and simple look for the face
  • lighting decent not too bright on the whole.
3) My cover lines will be associated with the picture i decide to use to do with a simple look of fashion and design. I may consider to do a vogue, junior, allure or cosmopolitan magazine look which will link with fashion and style overall.
The cover lines will be associated with fashion and looks to make it seems more intriguing for the audience.

4)Sketch:

Advertising assessment learner response:

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

1)Feedback:

  • WWW: very well revised and good application of theory.
  • EBI: A bit more explicit focus on the Question and a slightly more developed response for question 1.

2) Read the whole mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

Things I missed:
Q1)

  • Female gaze that Rosaline suggests this advert diamonds could link to that because women feel they are empowered.
  • Paparazzi style shot as there is presentation of over exposed subject along with steroetypical aspects of beauty.
  • Brand logo serif font and monochrome colour.
  • Hypermasculinity presented which emphasise traditional hetrosexual image.
Q2)
  • Armani advert reflects the crisis of masculinity as there is reference to a assertive heterosexual look which could reflect the struggle that men face to find their place in society.
  • score hair cream advert represents the male as a hunter in a foreign jungle setting which means that it could be reference to the British empire and the colonial dominance of the 19th century.
Q3)
  • lack of major advertising campaigns that seek to explicitly challenge or call out traditional masculine stereotypes as for women the real Dove women campaign and always like a girl campaign that has challenged dominant representation of women.
  • The Boss life campaign being quite hostile or abusive as i may suggest that strong masculine role models needed to prevent men becoming emasculated.

3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment?

For this assessment i would say I did around 7/10.

4) Look at your answer and the mark scheme for Question 1. What aspect of technical film language (camerawork, mise-en-scene etc.) or advertising persuasive techniques do you need to revise to improve your response to this kind of question in future?

I need to revise the camera work and how specific symbols are used in adverts to create specific meanings as back lighting is used which make it seem like a fashion show and chiaroscuro all help to appeal to audiences.

5) Look at your answer and the mark scheme for Question 2. What aspects of the cultural and historical context for the Score hair cream advert do you need to revise or develop in future?

  • I need to revise Hypermasculinty and how it can prevent men from being emasculated and Decriminalisation of masculinity.
  • The British empire and colonial dominance in the 19th century.
  • difference between the representations of men and women (e.g the Swinging 60's)

 6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 3 - the 20 mark essay question on David Gauntlett and masculinity 'in crisis'. Write a completely new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples/textual analysis from the Advertising CSPs.

Q3) David Gauntlett has argued against the idea that masculinity is in 'Crisis'. To what extent do u believe that masculinity is in crisis?

I believe that masculinity is in crisis to some extent as there are factors that allude to this like feminism empowerment or the fact that now millennial are more accepting of more gender fluid assumptions and gender can be negotiated as David Gauntlett suggests. Also the statistics on mental health may also suggest that masculinity is in crisis as it could link with hyper masculine expectations.

One reason why masculinity may be in crisis as David Gauntlett suggests is because of there being lack of campaigns that empower men. There has been many campaigns that have empowered women in the past like the Dove  'real beauty' campaign and the always like a girl campaign which challenged the dominant representation women but men's campaigns do not even exists and there is no impact created. The idea of popular feminism has created this challenge to specific gender constructs of women within society but men may still undergo specific gender constructs as a result.
This can have problems created as statistics on mental health is significant because men are pressured to fit as Richard Dyer indicates and hegemonic masculinity is highly emphasised within society as Connolly (1995) suggests  there is construct so that particular view is taken. This reinforces a exaggeration of hyper masculinity as men are  living up to the societal expectations. This is also presented whilst there are certain products that are objectifying men and women for example the Armani advert which emphasises traditional male views regarding female bodies. Therefore, there are still traditional traits of males that are being emphasised to a very significant extent as males in jobs there are certain traits that are looked for when there is a manual job like strong masculine identities.

magazine practical task research:

1) Potential magazine covers to use:

Image result for magazine covers teen vogue Image result for magazine covers allure Image result for magazine covers teen

2) I may go with the first one as i would like to create something simple and to do with teens as i can also familiarise with it and i think it will be interesting in doing so.

3)Image result for magazine covers teen Image result for magazine covers teen  Image result for magazine covers teen

The cover lines are bold and hits audiences eyes very quickly the pictures are also very bold and the design is quite bright making it seem quite glamorous and sophisticated by having the masthead in different colours and making it much more bigger. These magazines take a aesthetic and popular culture approach that promote girls style and glamour and may create rise in expectations of fashion as a result.
