Genre Blog Task

Fact sheet 3:

1) The example that s provided for why visual iconographies are important are star trek and star wars which is related to science fiction.

2)The example provided for importance of narrative in identifying genre are Independence Day, Deep Impact and The day after tomorrow and the heroes are represented in codes and conventions of the genre to help identify it.

3)The difference between between character representation is action movies and disaster movies is that the characters within the action movies convey individual strength and power where as in disaster movies they portray team work and collaboration between the characters.

4) According to Bordwell films can be categorised via period or country, Director or star , technical process, style , series and audience which all contribute to the codes and conventions within the film.

5)  Audiences use Genre  in a number of ways for example through 1)selecting what is best for them and this enables them to choose and whilst comparing different TV shows people normally describe the genre. 2)own knowledge because they will know what genre they like or dislike 3)The fact that the genre of the film prepares its audience as they will know what to expect from the film.

6)The three ways genre is used by institutions and producers is through production which means to look at successful examples of genre and replicate them within their film or TV series. 2) Attracting an audience which means making audiences try new sit coms and help the media become more successful.3)Marketing text through trailers and posters which helps the film become more successful.

7)The Film Genre which has helped genre to evolve is science fiction and horror and over time iconographies have changed but genre become stale and uninteresting.

Fact sheet 126:

1)five films with superhero Genre:

  • scott pilgrim vs the world
  • spiderman
  • guardians of the galaxy
  • iron man
  • Hulk
2)The superhero genre has allowed audiences to engage with the films more and feel more empathy for the characters within these films which help them underpin the ideologies relating to other texts and change their perspectives based on this.

3)Schatz theory can be applied to superhero genre as it states that the codes and conventions give a hint to the audience what the genre might be this is through innovation and the fact that it was being replicated through different movies engaged with the audience more. This created parodies of these films so that audiences don't take them too seriously. This theory stated that audiences look at the genre more than the story being told and sometimes this can also have a negative effect as the genre may disappear like in horror movies and disengage from the audience.

General:
1) The film that i will be talking about will be Forest Gump because i think this film is very interesting the way it is set out as it communicates to the audience really well through the protagonist of this film.
2) This film was a modern fiction which is war related but made very distinctively as the protagonist speaks thought the majority of the film and i watched it during history as it was related to the thing i was studying.
3)The that i thought it was more of violence and a normal story to it but this was very different as the film mainly focused on how this solider got through the war and this movie mainly layered different perspectives on top of Forrest's .As the audience, we get his perspective on events,  but we also can use our superior smarts to figure out what is really going on in situations that go straight over sweet, dumb Forrest's head. This is narrative irony which is when the audience knows something the character doesn't.
4)I thought this film was a romantic comedy.
5)I thought this genre fit in well with the film as these elements go with the protagonist's personality and the story of the film.
6)The basic themes of this film are used specifically to portray the values and ideologies of the film as there is classical irony which creates a specific atmosphere  for the audience as the character doesn't know something that we do which links in with drama and romance of this film.
7)This genre is very typical in terms of context as the visual iconographies that are used within this film vary to a large extent as it mediates within this movie and generates a certain atmosphere for the audience.
8)The expectations i would have from this film is that i would expect there to be a happy ending but the ending wasn't which made this film very different in terms of other films and makes it stand out which shows the audience the deconstruction of the genre and how they are used to establish different aspects within movies.
9)I haven't found any generic labels for this media text.
10) The generic labels vary considerably as the film s named Forrest Gump which link in with his emotions.
11) The conventions i found within this film were closely linked with genres of integration as the main themes comedies romance and internal conflict is all focused on by Forrest giving this film a varied set of ideologies and making it classical.
12)The film does stretch the conventions to a minimum extent but keeps it well established by making it less of a parody and more of a deconstructed film establishing new ideas and emotions through the protagonist making the audience feel empathy for him.
13)The text departs when he starts talking about his love life which  wouldn't have expected him doing within this film as i thought he would be more physically damaged by the war but he was also emotionally damaged as well.
14)The conventions of this movie are closely linked as they are drama comedy and romance which make this movie a very good deconstruction and not a parody.
15)The familiar motifs are used when Foresst is telling his story which could be pasted from a biography film making it have some elements of cliche but not too much making it seem more innovated by establishes these varied Genres within this film.

Mode of address:
1) I think that the target audience for this film would be mainly males as it is a war related film but also could be open for anyone to watch especially those who are interested in the war life.
2)This film brings out the idea that war life was very tough and shows how it was very hard to survive.
3) It could be assumed that i am more of a person that is interested in history and could make me look as more of a nostalgic person.
4) the assumption that could be made from this film is that mainly adults would watch it who are European but teenagers do watch it because its a very intriguing film.
5)The interests it assumes we have is that the interest in war history and maybe even philosophy.

Relationships to other texts:
1)This film points out a number of differences compared to other films for example other films like the kite runner is based on the persons life during war but not that physically damaged more emotionally. The visual iconographies point this out as a number of locations are used.
2) This movie resembles other movies as it is similar to other movies which could make this a classical as the movie portrays conventions that have been repeated before.
3)The themes that this movie tries to bring out is romantic comedy and this conveys the drama and the emotional damage that happened to this person physically as well as emotionally.
4)The major differences that this film portrays is the fact that Forrest's life is dependant on these characters and he is the protagonist of this film and the narrative structures are portrayed significantly well through visual iconographies creating a better atmosphere for the audience.
