A Level Media - End of year 1 exam: Learner response
Create a new blogpost on your Media Exam blog called 'End of Year 1 exam learner response' and work through the following tasks:
1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).
2) Read the mark scheme for this exam carefully, paying particular attention to the 'indicative content' for each question. Identify ONE point you could have added for the first three questions in Section A:
Q1 additional point/theory:
- Barthes theory action and enigma codes of the weapons used by the male and facial expression that create enigma for audiences along with conventional cover lines 'those slimy rodents' and 'bachelor girls run wild'.
- Propp’s character types reflect traditional gender roles in wider culture – active male hero, passive female heroine (‘damsel in distress’).
Q3 additional point/theory/CSP reference:
- Genre theory – Buckingham & dynamics of genre; Neale ‘similarity and difference’. Billie Jean hugely influential in the pop music video genre.
3) Section B requires you to write extended essays with 35 minutes and 5-7 well-developed paragraphs per question (excluding introduction and conclusion). Count the number of paragraphs you wrote for each question in Section B excluding your introduction/conclusion:
Q6 number of paragraphs:
3 paragraphs
Q7 number of paragraphs:
2 paragraphs
4) Question 6 (TV industry) was arguably the hardest question on the exam. Write a new paragraph that answers the question referring to either Capital or Deutschland 83 and the global TV industry. Use the indicative content in the mark scheme to help you.
06 To what extent do your television Close Study Products reflect the global nature of the television industry?
The global nature of television is reflected to a significant extent due to the changing expectations of audiences in terms of the construction and consumption of television drama as capital reflects the idea of multiculturalism. There are subtle references that are made within the show as it conveys the impact of financial crash and is a state of the nation drama. It could be argues that this show is mainly aimed at British BBC audiences because of the representation of house prices, Eastern European builders and city Bankers. This show also reflects the global nature of television because of the setting which is established and these universal themes reflect the idea of how consumption has changed because of it representing capitalist and left ideologies. The changing global nature of television is reflected through Deutschland 83 as digital media has changed the way audiences watch television – reflecting global changes in the media industries which means that audiences are increasingly binge watching shows and watch long term TV drama.
5) Question 7 was a synoptic question that rewarded your ability to cover all four key concepts of Media. Write a new paragraph for this essay using the indicative content in the mark scheme to help you.
Men's Health has maintained a loyal audience through the audience pleasures it offers like personal identity and surveillance as Blumler and Katz claim. This is possible when readers see themselves within this magazine as their ambitious lives can also be seen to be reflected within it along with information being provided in how to become fit. This may be helpful to audiences as they will look at the products conveyed like gym equipment and workout regimes that can be followed. The articles within this magazine like the marathon man features new ideologies as it challenges the idea that only young can be fit and provides audiences with motivation through the use of this man for men to maintain a loyal audience. The editors letter also helps to maintain a loyal audience as it shows differences between the highly educated and highbrow and establishes traditional masculine goals helping audiences to achieve their goals.
