1) In media studies representation is a important concept in media studies due to the fact it is the way the media presents the real world to an audience as texts are seen to be as artificial, constructed versions of reality and it is vital because certain things are used to portray certain places and people in certain ways to establish their concept of it which helps audiences to engage and get a more of a generalised view of the media.
This is also important as everyone as their own perspective in the way they view the media and this this is communicated through the media.
2) The picture of Kate Middleton helps to portray how different meanings can be created in the media because she is a individual who is being conveyed which is coming between the actual event or the audience as some people may think that the duchess herself has a drinking problem which could imply a critical view of the monarchy. This is the process of mediation as the audience is being encouraged to a particular view.
3) The how who and why of the media of representation is the way media texts are analysed through these questions and this allows the individual to have different ideologies and these begin to be viewed as natural to the viewer as they have become accustomed to the genre the audience they are seeing. Furthermore the how is the way the expectations are met in the target audience and this goes with genre they wish to create. Also choices are made and are either rejected.
4) Stuart Hall's theory fits with representation because it makes sense of the preferred reading as this would be to portray the women in the taken trailer in a dominant representation to reinforce the stereotype of them being vulnerable in certain situations and oppositional readings would be that why are these representations being made even in today's society. This only sometimes appears in audiences as only some being to question certain ideologies of the media depicting the idea that representations of certain aspects are not fixed.
5)The new technology has changed the way representations have changed in the media due to the fact that there are various ways of distributing the product within the media getting the audiences more engaged through social media their feed and the news.
6)National identities is represented through constructed for the audience by using certain behaviours and characteristics to promote their character. These identities may have been conveyed because people want to find the new 'English identity.' Some audiences in the media go against this because they may have other opinions that they go with which means that not everyone will passively accept certain ideologies.
Richard Dyer goes with the taken trailer because certain stereotypes are presented within this trailer which means certain people are given more power than others. Also these are promoted through the girls character and the Dad taking full responsibility.
We could also apply Medhurst's theory to this because the trailer gives a taster of the stereotypes that are conveyed within the trailer in a very short space of time because we are shown a kidnap of a girl and how the dad deals with this which may be seen negatively as whilst he is on the phone to her she gets taken away which means this may be seen very negatively.
This trailer could be also applied to Tessa Perkins theory because women could be shown in a dominant stereotype but this could further indicate how they cope with this situation which is rather strong. This could reinforce a positive stereotype for women amongst society.
Also this trailer could be applied to Levi-Strauss theory of representation and ideology because as he states that something may be left out on purpose to create these dominant and preferred readings. This may be things like why she was actually kidnapped and how this situation lead to this event which could be used to imply these certain readings that the audience applies to this trailer. This is because the producer may want certain reading to be displayed as their ideologies could be linked to this.
